Latin America fuels Telefónica’s TV growth
Telefónica ended June with 3.1 million pay TV subscribers, up from 2.9 million at the end of March. The telco is seeing particularly strong growth in Latin America.
In Spain Telefónica ended June with 785,000 pay TV customers, up 5% year-on-year. However, lower ARPU across of all of its services and “intense price pressure” meant first half revenues were down 6.1% to €8.75 billion.
The telco’s pay TV base in Czech Republic continued to fall, ending June with 130,000 subs which was 3% fewer than a year earlier.
Telefónica saw more success in Latin America, where the operator added 315,000 new customers in the first half of the year to take its TV customer total to 2.1 million. The telco offers TV services in Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Peru and Venezuela. Its largest market is Peru, where it has 736,000 pay TV subs after adding 25,000 during the first half of the year.
