Netflix launches across Lat Am; eyes Spain and UK
US online video service Netflix is launching in 43 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean later this year. â¨This marks the second international move for the streaming content provider after launching in Canada earlier this year. â¨
Netflix is also expected to launch in Spain next year and the company is hoping to enter the UK market by the end of 2012. â¨
The service will launch in Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean in Spanish, Portuguese and English. â¨The company has already been striking new content deals with major Hollywood studios; CBS, which produces and distributes series including Hawaii Five-O, The Good Wife and NCIS as well as the CSI franchise, announced in May that it was in talks with Netflix to provide content for its Latin American launch. â¨
On the company’s first-quarter conference call in April, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said Netflix could enter as many as two international markets or more per year starting from 2012. This follows its success in Canada, where it has over 800,000 subscribers. ⨔If we continue to see the kind of success that we’ve seen in Canada, we think it would be very smart for us to move at least that fast, yes,” he said.
