Digital TV homes will double by 2016

The number of homes equipped with digital TV will double by end-2016, according to new research. Digital TV Research forecasts that digital TV penetration will increase from 42.5% at end-2010 to 80% by end-2016.

Across the 73 countries surveyed by the report authors, 33 will have completed digital switchover by end-2016.
The sharp increase equates to an extra 613 million digital TV homes between end-2010 and end-2016. The number of analogue homes will fall from 780 million to 297 million across the same period.

“Of the 613 million digital TV homes to be added between 2010 and 2016, 256 million will come from digital cable,” said report author Simon Murray. “Primary FTA DTT [homes taking DTT but not subscribing to cable, DTH or IPTV] will bring in a further 154 million, with pay DTT adding five million. Pay IPTV will increase by 121 million, with pay DTH up 56 million and FTA DTH 22 million.”
