Red Bee launches Red Player online platform

Broadcast services provider Red Bee Media has launched a new online video player that can deliver content to connected devices including computers, smartphones, tablets and connected TVs.

Red Bee’s RedPlayer will target broadcasters, studios and brand owners, offering distribution and managed services, including encoding, transcoding and content protection.  The company said it had developed the platform in response to a growing demand for monetisable “broadcast quality” online services.

Red Bee, which manages over 90% of broadcaster video-on-demand content consumed in the UK, said RedPlayer delivers high quality images and smooth playback combined with sophisticated security supporting the latest digital rights management platforms. It can integrate live content with an EPG that links past, present and future programming and has the option to deliver programmes online immediately after linear transmission. It supports flexible business models, including subscription, download-to-own, rental and capped or uncapped library access, using Cisco Videoscape Media technology.

Steve Plunkett, director of technology and innovation at Red Bee Media said: “The online video market has developed considerably in recent years, both in terms of technology and viewer demographics. This has attracted increasing volumes of high quality content, a broader range of content providers and raised viewer expectations. Now brands, rights holders, production companies and studios are competing directly with traditional broadcasters through the open market of the internet. Slow, unreliable video platforms are no longer good enough, especially when customers are paying for content. RedPlayer has been forged as a result of this new dawn presenting an unprecedented opportunity to all businesses with quality content”.
