Star TV launches in Germany using HbbTV

Indian broadcaster Star TV is launching four channels in Germany in partnership with content aggregator Mediapool. The channels will launch using HbbTV, the hybrid TV platform.

The four TV channels are Star Plus, Star Gold, Star News and Star One, which between them broadcast entertainment programming, news and Bollywood films. Each channel is subtitled in English.

The channels will be marketed to owners of HbbTV-compliant devices, including set-top boxes and TV sets. Star TV’s head of UK and European business Yeshpal Sharma said: “Our co-operation with Mediapool allows us for the first time to reach customers in Germany with our market-leading TV channels. The use of the HbbTV technology also opens up a new opportunity to address the many open-minded German TV viewers, that are interested in culture, news and entertainment from India.“


Mediapool said the HbbTV standard enabled it to deliver specialised content in a cost effective way.
