European cable losing TV market share

Cable remains the leading platform for pay TV services in Europe, but it is steadily losing market share, according to the latest research from Informa Telecoms & Media. In 2000 cable accounted for 77% of all pay TV subscriptions in Europe. By end-2009 this had fallen to 54% and will drop to 43% by end-2015, according to Informa’s forecasts.

DTH is the largest gainer in terms of market share. It accounted for 23% of the pay TV market, by subscriptions, in 2000 and that rose to 28% in 2009. Informa predicts this proportion will fall away slightly, to 27%, by end-2015.
IPTV accounted for 9% of pay TV homes in 2009 and that is forecast to rise to 18% by end-2015.
