DivX announces European VOD deal and Yamaha Blu-ray

European consumer electronics retailer Media Markt is to launch a new video-on-demand service using the DivX video format.

Consumers will be able to rent videos from mediamarkt.de/downloads either streamed or downloaded as DivX files. The catalogue includes a range of film titles compatible with DivX-certified devices. The deal is the second content deal for DivX following its agreement with Warner Bros France.

Separately, at the IFA trade fair in Germany, DivX has announced that chipset provider Broadcom’s BCM3549 and BCM3556 connected digital television SoC solutions are the company’s first platforms to complete DivX Plus HD Certification. Broadcom’s chips will power the playback of DivX Plus HD 1080p video in the MKV container on digital TVs using the USB slot or streaming from the home network via DLNA. DivX and Yamaha yesterday announced the global launch of DivX Plus HD-certifed Blu-ray disc players.
