Seydoux: collapse of windows could spell end of cinema

Moves by service providers to deliver video-on-demand movies in the same window as their theatrical release would spell the demise of cinemas and, by extension, the film industry in general, according to Jerôme Seydoux, CEO of film production and distribution group Pathé.

In an interview with French financial daily Les Echos, Seydoux said that it was crucial that different windows for cinema and DVD and VOD distribution were respected. In France, there is a delay of four months between the theatrical release of movies and their release on DVD and VOD.

Seydoux’s comments came ahead of the planned release on the Filmo TV VOD platform of Jean-Luc Godard’s feature-length film, Film Socialisme, at the same time as it is shown at the Cannes Film Festival.
