Numericable to launch HD 3D VOD by year-end

Numericable is planning to launch a high-definition 3D video-on-demand service based on Cisco’s content delivery service platform.

According to Cisco, the 3D service will launch by the end of the year and will be based on the infrastructure provider’s content delivery service platform, which was installed by Numericable over a year ago to assist with VOD and catch-up services. Cisco said it would enable the French cable operator to meet the bandwidth and quality of experience requirements for HD 3D content delivery. Industry body the 3D-HD Alliance is supporting the new service.

Jean-Christophe Dessange, head of new media development, Europe, Cisco said: “The true HD 3D experience represents a paradigm shift for television consumption comparable to what colour did for black-and-white TV. Full 3D TV represents a new set of visual encounters and Numericable’s ambitious plans make it an ideal partner for us as we work to reinvent the TV experience.”
