Today marks the 60th birthday of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
The organisation was launched by broadcast organizations from 23 countries in Torquay in the UK on February 12 1950 as a successor to the pre-war International Broadcasting Union with a mission to defend the interests of broadcasting in the technical and legal fields. The first official Eurovision TV transmission was to take place from Montreux in 1954, bringing together experts from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the UK.
