Star DTV targets East Africa

China-based pay-TV company Star DTV is to launch operations in Uganda, in competition with MultiChoice’s DStv and Pearl Digital TV.

According to local reports, Star DTV plans to offer 30 channels for UGX15,000 (€5.50) a month and 40 for UGX25,000 with an access fee of UGX120,000. The operator believes that it can achieve a subscriber base of 300,000 in Kampala and neighbouring areas after one year. Star DTV is already operating in nearby Rwanda and plans to launch services in Tanzania, Kenya and Burundi.
