Lattelecom rejects claims over cost of digital transmission

Latvian telco Lattelecom has rejected a claim by broadcasters LNT and TV3 claiming that it is overcharging for carriage on its digital TV service.

Responding to claims that its digital TV platform was more expensive than analogue transmission, Lattelecom pointed out that its digital signals covered 99% of the country’s territory, while analogue transmission of the various channels was only available in 50% to 87% of Latvia’s territory.

Lattelecom suggested that broadcasters may be using the argument over charges as an excuse to become pay-TV services. The company said that such an argument was disingenuous and that any move to pay-TV would in reality be based on other commercial factors.
