Cable passes 20 million broadband customers

The number of broadband cable customers in Europe has passed 20 million.

According to industry body Cable Europe, there are now 20.8 million cable broadband customers in the EU. It made the announcement during a meeting being held in Brussels between cable company CEOs and Vivian Reding, European Commissioner for the Information Society. Among the issues being discussed are cable’s investment in next-generation networks for Europe, the need for an efficient copyright clearance system in Europe to help streamline costs, and the renewal of State Aid for broadband.

During the meeting, Cable Europe also revealed that the cable industry employed 84,000 people at the end of 2008, a 43% rise over a five-year period.
