Zon Multimédia arrests pay-TV decline


Portuguese pay-TV provider Zon Multimédia managed to slow down the decline in its pay-TV subscriber base in the second quarter. The operator suffered a net loss of 3,900 subscribers, compared with a loss of 18,200 in the first quarter in the face of competition from Portugal Telecom.

Overall, pay-TV subscribers numbered 1,591,400, up 2.2% year-on-year. Premium pay-TV subscribers grew by 73,000 in the first half to reach 902,300.

The number of subscribers taking Zon’s new HD set-top reached 285,400 at the end of June, up 101,500 quarter-on-quarter. The operator added 26,500 broadband customers in the course of the quarter.

Zon said its triple-play base now numbered 391,000, up 19.2% year-on-year. Total revenue-generating units numbered 3,547,100, up 24.5% year-on-year, with blended ARPU of €33.10 (up 4.5%).

Operating revenues for the first half were €400.6m, up 7.2%, with EBITDA of €130.8m, up 8.6%. Net income fell by 29.2% to €29.1m.
