Virgin Media and Universal Music to offer download service
UK cable operator Virgin Media has signed a deal with Universal Music that will see the launch of a subscription-based music download service.
The service will enable Virgin Media broadband customers to stream and download an unlimited amount of music tracks and albums from Universal Musics catalogue for a monthly fee. The music can be kept permanently and stored on any MP3-compatible device. A cheaper entry-level fee will enable a limited number of downloads each month.
The service will launch later this year and Virgin Media said it was in talks with other major and independent music labels with a view to extending the service.
