News Corp confirms Carey to replace Chernin

News Corp has confirmed the appointment of DirecTV CEO Chase Carey as deputy chairman, president and chief operating officer, replacing Peter Chernin when the latter steps down on July 1.

Carey, whose return to News Corp has been widely rumoured in recent days, will oversee all of the media giant’s global operations, reporting to chairman Rupert Murdoch.

Carey previously served as chief operating officer of News Corp between 1996 and 2002, and played a major role in masterminding the company’s worldwide TV strategy encompassing the Fox network and TV stations, Fox’s cable programming and News Corp’s international satellite operations, before joining US pay-TV provider DirecTV.
