Korean operator deploys largest cable IPTV service to date

Technology company Harmonic is supplying its Direct-2-Edge (D2E) cable IPTV technology to Korean hybrid FTTH, DSL and cable network operator SK Broadband to support the largest cable IPTV deployment globally to date.

SK, which does not currently offer broadcast services on its network for regulatory reasons, will use Harmonic’s NSG 9000 EdgeQAMs and D2E to provide a uniform broadcast IPTV service across its cable, DSL and fibre networks. On the cable plant, services will be delivered using a modular CMTS and DOCSIS 3.0 infrastructure. SK, previously known as Hanaro, has about six million subscribers in Korea.

Separately, Harmonic has struck a deal to supply its SUPRALink 1550nm dense wave division multiplexing solution to the province of Salzburg in Austria to upgrade its HFC cable infrastructure. The deployment is part of an upgrade that will help Salzburg increase the bandwidth of its network for DOCSIS 3.0 services.
