The Spanish government is moving ahead with a plan to tax telecom operators as well as commercial broadcasters to compensate the phasing out of advertising by public broadcaster TVE, according to press reports.
The government plans to raise a 0.9% tax on the revenues of the telcos and a 3% tax on broadcasters, a spokesman for the Comisiones Obreras trade union was reported as saying.
The French government controversially legislated a similar scheme last year, following a decision to phase out advertising on public broadcaster France Télévisions channels.
