BBC partners with Spotify, YouTube on new music product

The BBC is teaming up with Spotify, Deezer and YouTube to launch new digital music product that will let listeners export music they hear on the BBC to online playlists.

Announced yesterday as part of BBC director general Tony Hall’s new vision for the BBC, the corporation said that BBC Playlister will “transform people’s relationship” with music from the BBC.

Playlister will let users sign-in and collate tracks that they hear on the BBC to personal playlists. These can be exported to Spotify, Deezer and YouTube so that the songs can be played back in full.

Users will also be able to use Playlister to discover recommended tracks from their favourite BBC DJs and presenters.

The BBC said that the first stage of the BBC Playlister launch is due in the coming days on PC and via a mobile browser. It added that the BBC will look to add a number of other services to the product over time.

“BBC Playlister is a wonderful innovation from the BBC that has been designed purely with audience needs in mind. We have a proud musical heritage that dates back to the very beginning of the BBC’s history, and over the years we have found many new ways of bringing fantastic music to our viewers and listeners,” said Hall.

Chris Maples, Spotify’s VP of Europe added: “The BBC and Spotify share a passion for offering lovingly curated, great music to music fans, making Spotify a great partner for BBC Playlister.”
