VBox launches new app for Android set-top-boxes

VBox Communications is unveiling a new app for Android set-top boxes at IBC.

The app will bring live, broadcast-quality TV and recording capabilities to Android set-top boxes and will be available for free download from the Android play store next month.

The app will be compatible with VBox’s new TV gateway, which receives broadcast TV signals from terrestrial, cable and satellite sources and converts them to IP in the home.

The gateway is designed to serve as a whole-house DVR/PVR and simultaneously streams multiple broadcast TV channels across the home network to any connected device.

The app enables viewers to watch live TV directly from their Android set-top box without an additional TV receiver.

Viewers can control the app via any Android box remotecontrol. The app also allows users to watch Full HD channels on their Android box without hardware decoding.

“Android set-top boxes are quickly becoming the most common media players for TVs, but they are only used for OTT content, and users need an additional set-top box to enjoy broadcast TV,” said Amir Aharonovich, VP of marketing for VBox

“Instead of toggling back and forth between Netflix movies on an Android box and the evening news on a STB, our solution brings broadcast TV and OTT together. We empower viewers by enabling them to enjoy their favorite TV shows as they air, and access their OTT content from the same box.”
