Ultra HD TV panel shipments reach 1 million

Shipments of Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV panels exceeded one million for the first time in March, a more than threefold increase month-over-month according to IHS stats.

The research firm said that UHD TV panel shipments reached 1.1 million in March, up from 384,300 units in February. In March 2013, shipments were fewer than 150,000.

“Contributing to the market’s exceptional showing in March were UHD pre-stocking orders for China’s Labour Day holiday at the beginning of May, and the FIFA World Cup in June,” said IHS.

The research found that the top-three biggest panel makers in March were Taiwan’s Innolux in first place, followed by South Korea’s Samsung Display  and LG Display in second and third.

Demand for UHD panels will grow to 68.4 million units by 2018, up 350% from 2014, predicts IHS. By comparison, TV panel shipments in general will rise by just 12%, it said.
