Roku to launch in UK next year

Connected TV set-top provider Roku has become the latest US over-the-top video specialist to announce a UK launch.

Roku will begin selling its streaming media players in the UK and Canada from next year, according to CEO Anthony Wood. Details on the models and pricing to be made available will be released at a later date.

Roku is also extending its platform to international developers to support free, ad-supported or paid region-specific channels.

In the US Roku offers boxes for between US$60-90 (€30-45), offering around 350 channels of music, video and games. The company’s boxes carry the Netflix player. Earlier this year it launched Roku 2, adding casual games including Angry Birds. It also offers premium service HBO Go in the US.
