Hunt: Sky takeover would boost diversity

Jeremy Hunt, the UK culture secretary, has said News Corp’s takeover of pay TV operator BSkyB would boost the diversity of British media. The claim came as he announced that he would likely make his final decision on whether to allow the takeover on April 26.

Speaking to the Commons culture select committee, Hunt expressed his confidence that the plan to allow the takeover subject to News Corp selling off Sky News would increase plurality as Sky News would become more independent than it is currently, reports the Telegraph newspaper.

Hunt separately said that he expects to announce a final decision on 26 April when parliament returns from the Easter break.  He added that News Corp would face regulatory investigation if the takeover had a major negative effect on the commercial sector.
