Sky Deutschland predicts subscriber boost

German satellite pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland is confident that it will grow its subscriber numbers by more than 200,000 in the next quarter. This comes following disappointing subscriber numbers for its third-quarter results.

CEO Mark Williams told investors that the company was “more confident” of beating the 201,000 subscribers that it gained in the last quarter.
News Corp Europe CEO James Murdoch added: “We don’t believe that Germany is a unique animal and that Germans will not pay a fair price for better packaging and technology in TV.”

Sky Italia, meanwhile, expects to breakthrough the five million-subscriber mark in the next twelve months. The satellite pay-TV platform currently has 4.8 million subscribers, a number that has remained unchanged in the previous two quarters. However, Murdoch told investors that it expects this to change in 2010. “We will get through five million customers in the next year in a market that continues to be underpenetrated,” he said.
