BBC and commercial radio team up for new player

UK public broadcaster the BBC has teamed up with commercial radio stations to develop a new online radio player that aims to offer the output of every licensed UK radio station and let users search for content by subject, musical style or song title.

According to the BBC, the UK Radioplayer will launch next year. It will take the form of a pop-up console that will be open to stream over 400 stations, incorporating a new search engine designed for radio. RadioCentre, Global Radio and Guardian Media Group have already signed up for the player, which will be launched through radio stations’ websites. All BBC stations will be included, subject to approval.

Separately, the BBC has announced that its HD channel will premiere a selection of short films next Saturday, from 23:35. Four of the films are independent productions, with the remainder being the result of collaborative production schemes between various BBC departments or via a partnership between BBC Films and the UK Film Council.
