Zon reverses pay-TV decline in third quarter

Portuguese triple-play provider Zon Multimédia recorded 36.9% triple-play penetration and 435,900 triple-play customers at the end of the third quarter. The company’s net revenue generating unit growth for the first nine months of the year was 403,100, up 45.5% year-on-year.

Zon added 3,300 net pay-TV subscribers in the third quarter, a return to growth after a decline in the second quarter, taking basic subscribers to 1,594,700. The company added 117,300 subscribers to its top range Funtastic package in the course of the first nine months, and installed 326,600 HD Zon boxes, taking penetration to 26.6%, up from 6% a year previously. Zon continues to be the pay-TV market leader, with a 68% share and a total base of around 1.6 million, with growth in higher-revenue customers offsetting a decline in single-play satellite customers.
Broadband and voice net additions for the quarter were 21,900 and 50,600 respectively, giving 50.3% broadband penetration of its customer base and 44.8% voice penetration.

Blended ARPU for the quarter grew by 6.2% to €34. Operating revenues for the quarter were €205m, up 8%, while net income was €11.9m, up 21.8%. However, net income for the nine months was down 19.5% to €41m.
