CanalSat to launch low-cost entry-level package

French pay-TV provider CanalSat will launch a new low-cost subscription offer called Initial in September. The package, which will cost €9.99 a month, is designed to win new subscribers reluctant to sign up to a premium service during the recession.

Initial will offer about 50 channels, including 20 pay-TV channels (among them MCM, Voyage Télétoon, Sport Plus, Ciné FX and Ciné Polar), according to local press.

CanalSat also reportedly plans to offer a mid-price package in September for about €15 a month, including weekend-only access to the Canal Plus premium channel. This is designed to encourage subscribers to upgrade to the full Canal Plus Le Bouquet premium offer.

CanalSat is facing competition from Orange, which offers its five Orange Cinéma Séries channels and Orange Sport channel for €12 and €6 respectively.
