French DTT pay-TV not profitable in short term

French audiovisual regulator the CSA believes that the country’s digital-terrestrial pay-TV services will not be profitable in the short and medium term.

The news comes as Lagardère-owned kids channel Canal J is embroiled in a dispute with TV Numeric, one of the country’s pay-DTT operators. Canal J handed back its DTT licence in April as a result of the costs of the service; it paid €3m for the network but only generated €1m revenue as a result of poor subscriber take up.
